Hey everybody, Sonia Roselli! And today I’m going to show you how I prep my skin - over 50. One of the things that I teach people of any age is the most important step is your skin prep. And the reason is, I discovered this actually, I'll tell you this story. I discovered it when I was doing facials in my makeup studio in Chicago, and what I noticed was after I put makeup on after a facial, the skin always looked incredible.

And so, when I was developing my line of skin prep products, I was like we don't always have time to give ourselves a full blown facial, so why don't we do some of the things that we need to look our best? So, what I want to teach you today is why skin prep is so important, especially over 40, over 50. Once menopause starts to kick our ass a little bit! And it really does help the foundation and the complexion look youthful, radiant, and flawless. Not to mention ageless!

First thing we're going to start off with is our SexApeel, and this is my firstborn. And this is an instant exfoliating spray. Now it's very gentle, it doesn't go super deep, but you can use it all over your body, but I really developed it for the face, and I just, I love it, and it really helps the skin look beautiful. Now you really want to use this a couple of times a week. You can use it on your body daily.

So I'm just going to spray a couple little pumps in my hand. And I'm going to work in a downward motion starting in the center of the face. And I'm not going to use too much pressure. For me, I'm super touch-sensitive. And I'm just going to go side by side, and down.

Now I want to make sure that I don't do any kind of circular emotions here in the center of my face because what happens is, when we make those little circular motions, the product can get caught up in the vellus hair. I don’t know if you can see, but you will start to see product and dead skin roll off the face, and what it's doing is it's taking off that top layer of dead skin.

And the reason that that's important for skin prep is because, number one, when you put your product on the skin, it has a nice smooth surface to work on. But the other thing is, especially if you're going to shop for new foundation, this is a great tip: SexApeel your face before you shop for new foundation, because then you can actually see a proper color, because you've taken all that dead skin off and you can see the undertones of the skin quite nicely.

So then I take a clean washcloth, it’s damp, and I just work in downward motions. And I just rub this off the face. Now as you see I didn't use too much. And one of the things I see people doing is, they tend to use too much SexApeel, when you don't really need that much. Now I use a little bit more on my body. I use SexApeel a lot before I shave my legs. And let me tell you, it really comes in handy when you can't get a pedicure. I love it on the bottom of my feet, but for my face, you don’t need a lot. Like three, four, five pumps.

All right, so now that I have that done I'm going to follow up with some hydration, because I want to inject some hydration into the skin. And, after 50 our skin tends to be dry and it tends to be dehydrated, which means it’s lacking water and it's lacking oil. So, I want to add a little bit of Water Elixir, and I use four or five pumps.

I just kind of press it into my hand, and then I press it into the face. You can rub if you like, it’s not going to hurt, but for me, because I’m so touch sensitive, meaning I get really flushed when you manipulate the skin, I pat it into the skin. I also try to remember areas where we tend to show fine lines like the upper lips, crows feet, that kind of thing. I like to add it to my neck and chest, and I’m not super-sexy about it when I do it. I’m just trying to get out and get to work!

The next thing we're going to do is the Water Oil, and remember how I said our skin can be dry and dehydrated? Especially when menopause kicks in? Water Oil is going to inject that oil back into the skin. And the nice thing about Water Oil is it's very light, it doesn't create a film on the skin. It actually dries down into the skin very quickly and very easily, which is why it's such a good oil for makeup applications, or even before bed. I actually love this before bed, as well.

I put two pumps of Water Oil into my hand and I press it into the skin. And really it's gonna help my foundation glide on much nicer. It's going to fill in any fine lines and wrinkles. You want to make sure you don’t go past the orbital bone here with any oil, matter of fact. Because you don’t want that product to travel into your eye, because if it does, it’s going to create a film over your eye and you don’t want that.

If you have another facial oil that you like and you want to run out of it before you get some Water Oil - because Water Oil will change your life - add a little bit of Water Elixir to your favorite facial oil and it cuts it a little bit, and kind of dilutes it so that it’s nice and light before applying makeup.

Next thing I want to do is add a little bit of lip balm to my lips, because I like to let this sit while I do the rest of my face. I just really am adding all the moisture and the hydration here because, you know, youthful skin is just hydrated, and it helps everything lay on the skin much better.

So finally, I am going to use Water Balm. Now, Water Balm is going to be something that I absolutely love to do before anything. Before any makeup. Because it iss a makeup primer, and a moisturizer, day cream, night cream, serum - all in one. So I just take a little bit between my hands. Tap it in. And rub it all over the face. Now, you can use Water Balm for an eye cream. But I'm going to show you that in just a second.

So I’m just applying a little bit of Water Balm here, once I have it rubbed in, And I don’t know if you can tell, but I’m really using a very light touch to my skin because, you know after 50 - hell even after 40 - we really should watch how much we manipulate our skin because sometimes it can be sensitive.

I also like to use eye cream before I apply my makeup. However, not all eye creams are appropriate before makeup. Now I love super rich eye creams at night before bed. But for the daytime, I like a very lightweight eye cream. The reason is, if you have too emollient of an eye cream, it can cause your mascara and eyeliner to run, even if the products are waterproof because it's just so emollient. I mean, the best way that I can think of to explain to you is, remember back in the day when women used to take off makeup with cold creams? It’s kind of that same effect.

So I’m adding just a little bit of ice cream here, this is one we’ve been working on for two years. And I’m just lightly tapping where I’m crepey. You know some people say use this finger because it’s a lighter touch, but I kind of know how hard to press in. But if you’re new and you’re just like OK which finger should I use? You can use your ring finger. I don’t think it really matters, just don’t beat yourself up.

I also like to add a little bit to the top of the lid here because yeah, we tend to get dry and dehydrated there as well. Now once I have my “day” eye cream on, or a lightweight eye cream, then I’m going to come back in here with Water Balm, and I’m going to set a little Water Balm on top. Because Water Balm is like having a photo filter in real life. And I don’t know about you, but I am really not trying to show all the crepiness under here.

I also like to add a little bit of Water Balm to the top here as well, and to the lids. Now what I’m doing is I usually just take whatever is in my lid, because it’s not a lot, and I just apply it here. The other thing I like to do is I like to add a little bit of Water Balm around the lips where we tend to get little fine lines. I also like to add a little bit more around the crows feet.

And that is how I prep my skin before makeup, Over 50 Edition!
