What Moisturizer Should I Use Before Applying Makeup?
Throughout my makeup artistry career, I’ve always been known for my flawless complexion work. My secret weapon? Water Balm.
Why Water Balm?
Nobody’s got time for a moisturizer that can’t pull double duty! You need something that will moisturize your skin well, but isn’t so emollient that you can’t apply your makeup! Your search for the holy grail of moisturizers ends here: Water Balm. Your moisturizer, serum, toner, day cream, and night cream all in one. Your skin will feel smoother, softer, and look like you’ve applied a photo filter in person.
Water Balm is a lightweight 5-in-1 moisturizer that is great for all skin types. You can use Water Balm day and night, even on oily skin. You can even reapply Water Balm with a sponge on top of makeup for a quick refresh.
Water Balm is a great way to wrap up your skin prep ritual and seal in all your serums & oils, whether you're getting ready for bed or getting ready to apply your makeup.
Who Is Water Balm For?
Dry skin
Oily skin
Over 40 Skin
Those with fine lines and wrinkles
Anyone who wants compliments on their skin, not just their makeup.
How To Incorporate Water Balm into your Skincare Routine
I recommend using Water Balm in the morning and at night.
- Start with clean skin and/or exfoliated skin
- Apply any desired serums, like Water Elixir
- Apply your facial oil, I love Water Oil
- Apply your eye cream
- Tap a nickel sized amount of Water Balm between your fingers, then lightly tap all over the face, gently rub in evenly.
- Let your skin drink Water Balm for about 5 minutes before applying makeup (go make your coffee or grab a cup of tea!)
- Apply your sunscreen & your makeup as usual
Repeat steps 1-5 before bed!
Water Balm for Extra Dry Skin
Start with clean skin and apply a generous amount of Water Elixir to your face with a brush. Follow up with applying Water Balm in a thick layer. Let the mixture soak into the skin for 20 minutes. Pat any remaining product into the skin.

Mixing Water Balm
Using a Water Balm as part of your Skin Prep before makeup will help you achieve that glow from within, skin-like finish to your foundations. You can also use Water Balm to make a gel stain blush with your favorite powder blush
- Start with a clean palette for mixing. (Don’t have a makeup mixing palette? Use a clean plate from your kitchen.)
- Scrape a bit of your blush onto your plate. (I use a clean eyebrow spoolie.)
- Add 2-3 drops or Water Oil and mix with your brush.
- Add additional powder until desired color is achieved. Add additional oil if your mixture is too thick/dry.
- Apply to the face for a fresh flushed glow, use under foundation for an underpinning effect, or over foundation as your cream blush.
