Lost Your Passion For Bridal Makeup Post Pandemic? Here's How To Get Out Of That Rut!

STRUGGLING MAKEUP ARTISTS

The 'Rona meant a lot of days at home for many of us, and I know I was losing it. There are some days I feel like a total zombie. Like my mind is mush and my passion for brides or bridal makeup is in the damn toilet.

While I know my passion for makeup is still there, the reality is there are times I feel like I can’t continue doing it.

Sometimes I daydream about doing other things, because let’s be honest, I could pretty much rock anything I set my mind to. And really, so could you.

But there’s one thing I do know. Beauty is in our blood. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a plan B. Beauty is in me and my veins bleed glitter.

Here are five reasons why I think you may have lost the passion...just so you don’t feel like a crazy person:

1. It’s exhausting when all you see is Instagram-style makeup! It’s. Fucking. EXHAUSTING! You don’t want to paint like that just to be popular. You’re made to feel crazy because you don’t believe in baking and contouring. And it wears down your soul.

2. Your clients are becoming a real pain in the ass, or they don’t value you or your artistic talent. You’re just a commodity and treated like a technician to go through the motions of applying makeup. If you hear it’s “just makeup” one more time, you may scream!

3. You’re doing the same looks over and over again. You feel like you’re on autopilot.

4. You’re always on the damn computer or phone and spending less and less time with the people you care about. You can’t seem to get offline, even for a minute!

5. You don’t have anything to look forward to in your biz, and so you feel stuck. Lost.

Any of this sound familiar? If so, here are some ways you can spark that passion again, both in your life and in your career. I’ve got a real treat for you today.

First, let’s get real honest...we all lose our passion. We all go through moments in our careers where we fantasize about going to work doing something else. I fantasize about working for NASA to study stars and shit. So what you’re feeling is completely normal.

Now that we have my astronaut dreams out of the way, here are six things I do to get the passion back.

  1. DO SOMETHING YOU’VE NEVER DONE BEFORE

While we are creatures of habit, creating good habits does make us effective business owners and makeup artists. Sometimes when I get stuck or lose passion, I go and do something completely random in the arts.

For me, it’s playing with my cameras. For my friend Andie, it’s painting or writing her children’s stories. Maybe for you, it could be taking a cooking class or learning to play the piano. Whatever it is, dabble in the arts to awaken the creative spirit and mind.

When I’m really stuck, I will paint with watercolors or acrylics. I don’t know why, but it really gets my brain on an entirely new level. Being alone with something creative can really fill your soul with a new way of looking at things, and also provide a smoother flow the next time you pick up the brush.

Book, headphones, and coffee
  1. READ A BOOK

I am a book nerd like you wouldn’t believe. I read so many books that it would blow your mind.

But I have a secret that I don’t share with many people. I’m very challenged when it comes to reading comprehension. Meaning, I’m not one of those people who can read something and instantly get it. Even simple things. When I read, sometimes I have to read out loud because when I just look at the words, it just looks like a bunch of words.

So, you know how I read books?

I buy a paperback copy of a book AND the audio version of the book and listen and read at the same time. I’m also usually armed with a highlighter pen so I can highlight the best parts of the book. I know! I told you I was a total nerd! But this has been my process forever and it really works. Especially if you have a hard time paying attention to reading.

  1. TAKE A SOCIAL MEDIA BREAK

Would you believe me if I told you that my business survived a 60-day social media break? Yep! It’s true.

I scheduled posts and uninstalled all social media apps from my phone and went missing for 60 days! It was heaven. And guess what? It was still there when I got back!

Sometimes you just need a break, and getting off social media and into a new routine doing something else isn’t a bad thing.

While I was off social media, I still checked email, contacted my clients, talked to my customers, and was 20,000% focused on the inside of my biz. It was here I was the happiest.

I can’t recommend it enough—take a social media break! It doesn’t have to be 10 days. Try three days just to get your toes wet. While you’re off social media, schedule a photo shoot or go shopping for new makeup. Just get off the phone and do something fun.

  1. BUY NEW MAKEUP!

Why is it when you get a new brush or new makeup products, it seems like your artistry is so much better? It’s like when you wash your car and all of a sudden it feels brand new. HA!

Buying a few new things for your kit always makes you feel like a damn Picasso! And if you need some inspiration of shit to buy, I’m gonna give you a shameless plug on all things skin prep! BUY SKIN PREP HERE!

And last but not least, if all else fails:

  1. GIVE YOURSELF SOME GRACE

The pandemic has us all questioning our life choices, wondering if we're going to be part of the "great resignation"...and if that is you, that's OK! Remember you're smart enough to do anything you want!

Finally, in closing, take one day (or even an afternoon) to yourself. You can turn off the phone, step away from the computer, and take some time to your damn self. I mean, doesn’t ordering take out and giving yourself a full spa day sound divine?

Give yourself some grace. We can't always have the same passion day in and day out. Don’t put those high expectations on yourself.

Just take it one day at a time and love exactly where you are right now.

Love,
Sonia
