Sensitive Skin? Build Back the (Skin) Barrier

Sensitive Skin? Build Back the (Skin) Barrier

Skin care ain’t rocket science. There’s definitely lots of science involved, but it’s really not that complicated overall.

You know what the key is to healthy skin? A healthy skin barrier.

That’s it. End of story.

Well, not really, because I’m going to explain why a healthy skin barrier is the single most important aspect of skin care.

About the Skin Barrier

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. Its purpose is to defend your body against all the environmental nasties that are thrown at it every day (think pollution, sun, aging, smoking, etc.).

If your skin is dry, itchy, or red and inflamed, your skin barrier is compromised. And the only way to defend your skin from all that shit is to repair the skin barrier.

We all want smooth, even skin, right? That’s all about texture. None of us want redness, fine lines, or wrinkles. That all is the result of...say it with me...unhealthy skin barrier!

What Causes Sensitive Skin?

One of the first things I learned as an esthetician is that no one is born with sensitive skin--no one. The sensitivity comes from the dryness, redness, and irritation that comes from broken skin barriers. Which come from sun exposure, aging, and other environmental factors.

Got all that? Put it this way--if you have dry, damaged skin, odds are your skin will be sensitive. If you have healthy, hydrated skin, your skin most likely will not become sensitive.

Heritage also plays a role--did you know that most people from Western European countries like Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Denmark are all at higher risk for sensitive skin? Again, they aren’t born with it. But the genetic makeup of their skin is such that they are more vulnerable to sun damage that can cause sensitive skin.

But sensitive skin also occurs in those with naturally darker skin tones--more melanin does not mean you're free from skin sensitivity--anyone can experience sensitive skin from over-exfoliation and the use of too many skin products (as well as the environmental factors).

OK, so now that we know what causes sensitive skin, how do we prevent it?

Repairing and Avoiding Sensitive Skin

So, class...how do we repair sensitive skin and avoid flare-ups in the future?

That’s right--by fixing the skin barrier! And how do we fix the skin barrier?

With skin care products that use ceramides! Why? Because ceramides are the key to a healthy skin barrier! So, where do you find these skin care products with ceramides? Right here!

All Sonia Roselli Beauty skin care products are designed to help repair the skin barrier. That’s because these products are made in Japan and Korea, where skin care products revolve around a healthy skin barrier.

You don’t need to use a dozen or 50 different types of product. With skin care, less is more. And, as you probably know, Sonia Roselli Beauty is all about simplicity.

Is your broken skin barrier causing dryness and irritation, which is causing sensitive skin? Fix it with my ceramide-rich Water Elixir. Once your skin barrier is healthy, keep it hydrated and moisturized with my multi-purpose Water Balm to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles and smooth out the skin.

Then What?

Once your skin barrier has been repaired and you’re keeping it hydrated, you can start to use other products in your routine without experiencing the skin sensitivity you were before. Just don’t go overboard--remember, keep it simple!

An added benefit to maintaining a healthy skin barrier is that your makeup will go on SO MUCH SMOOTHER. You’ve probably tried applying makeup to dry, red, irritated skin. Sucks, doesn’t it? With a healthy and hydrated skin barrier, makeup goes on easily and lays beautifully on the skin.

Keep in mind, I’m right there with you...I’ve been dealing with rosacea for years, and it wasn’t until I repaired the skin barrier and kept my skin moisturized and lubricated (get your mind out of the gutter!) that my skin felt better and makeup looked better.

So, don’t forget, keep skin care and skin prep simple! Once you fix your skin barrier and then maintain its health, sensitive skin will be history!

XO,

Sonia
